Secure Research Data Strategy

Secure Research Data Strategy Training Guide FAQ

The University adopted the Research Data Protection Policy in order to promote good research practices and mitigate the risks associated with the use of restricted data in research. This plan addresses requirements for training in order to promote such good practices. To this end, the University’s Privacy and Security Council for University Research designed and approved the SRDS Training Plan on May 29, 2024.

Who will need to take training?
Researchers with a project with an active Data Use Agreement effective calendar year 2023 (and later) with a high SRDS protection level will need to take training.

Who is exempt from training?
BSD researchers who participate in annual UCMC-provided HIPAA training are exempt.

I was assigned training, what are the relevant deadlines?
Per the approved training plan, a trainee has 90 days to complete training.

What happens if I don’t complete the training?
Per the plan “A tiered approach similar to EHSA’s model where issues of non-compliance will move progressively to the Dean of each division.”

Do I have to take the training annually?
Yes, as long as you continue to meet the criteria.

I have enough training as it is, is this really necessary?
Yes. Those asked to take training conduct research dealing with extremely sensitive data. The University has an obligation to make sure you are advised of your responsibilities. To this end, the University’s Privacy and Security Council for University Research (PSCUR) designed and approved this plan. Most university staff and faculty have a significant training burden, and with this in mind, the training is 20 minutes, modular, and tailored to the University community.

Does this training cover any of my other training obligations?
It does not.  This training exists for special conditions as set by the University.  The training does not fulfill any other requirement set by the University or standards (e.g. HIPAA training, export control training, hazardous materials training.)
